Film Review

The plot of Worlds fastest indian is about an Old New Zealander called Burt Munro who has an old Indian scout motorcycle. He always dreamt of going to the Bonneville speed week festival on the salt flats in Utah. He manages to collect the sufficient funds to travel to the U.S to run his bike at the festival. With some small complications with accomodation, he makes it to his destination and finds out he can’t compete due to the fact he didn’t register a couple months prior to the event which he had no idea. Using his friendly charms, Burt makes some friends at the festival who later help him to get a run. With this run he gets, He sets a new land speed record for a motorcycle under 1000cc. With this record, he also received a big burn on his leg from the extreme exhaust temperature being spread throughout the bikes small shell. This record still stands to this day.

A character that stood out to me was the car salesman. He stood out because of how much trust he built with Burt in such a short amount of time. An example of this trust was when he trusted Burt to lock up his car yard for him and not to steal anything and leave. This shows how friendly they both were and how honest he was.

The setting in The Worlds Fastest Indian is used effectively as everything in the States is new to Burt. It shows us how different the U.S is, compared to New Zealand where everyone basically expects you to do things yourself. A great example of this is the taxi scene when Burt just arrives in in L.A. He catches a taxi and is surprised when he has to put his bags in the car without any help from the driver. This is a surprise to him because in New Zealand, the driver always gets out to help you with your luggage.

The directors intention for the film was to teach the viewers to never give up as Burt didn’t and keep persisting through all the obstacles that come in your way. In the Movie, it shows the benefits of persevering through the hard times and shows the reward on the other side. In Burts case, it’s that he gets to ride his bike in the speed week and set a new land speed record.

one cinematography technique used in the movie that I thanked worker really well was the close up shots when Burt was riding his motorcycle. It really added to the impression of speed that the viewers were experiencing. Not only the close ups while Burt was going fast, but also the other ones throughout the movie that added small details and gave information about Burts love for speed. An excellent example of this is at the very start of the film where the camera does a close up onto Burts clock. This one scene shows the viewers of Burts love for speed and how everything he does revolves around his love for speed.
