In the text “Why not?”, the writer uses a wide variety of language techniques to further enhance the writers view on taking a photograph and why it is so special to them. In the text, there are two brothers each with different perspectives on taking a photograph. The majority of the text is about one brother, the brother who loves a beautiful sunrise, sharing their opinion on why the importance of a photograph is beyond special to them. Using many language features, the writer is able to do this very effectively.

There are very few things in life that can officially be labelled as permanent. Whether it be money, happiness or even life itself. The idea of permanency doesn’t seem obtainable. This is where the writer explains their idea of permanency and why it makes a photograph that more special. The word permanence means the state or quality of lasting or remaining unchanged forever. This is the writers perspective on what a photograph accomplishes. “They will be safe, stored in gilded crystal frames on my desk instead of the fragile murk in my mind” is a quote the writer uses to further explain their idea of how important a photograph is. In this quote, the writer is talking about how fragile the mind and memory can become with age. But is explaining also that with the photograph, there is no worry about forgetting a beloved memory as they are in a permanent state where they will be trapped forever. The writer also says “I’d tell him that this Tuesday morning is sitting in my pocket now, safe from time”. This quote is further explaining the idea of how a photograph traps a moment in time for eternity. Lasting moments that will forever more be a pixelated moment trapped in time. In my opinion, the writer portrayed their ideas and beliefs on the idea of permanency very beautifully. Their use of similes and metaphors better paints a picture in the readers heads, therefore gives the readers more of an understanding as to what the writer believes can come from a photograph. I can also speak this from experience as when I was reading this, I could picture everything the writer was placing in my head.

Saving cherished memories within your mind is a lot easier said than done. They tend to slip away with age and basically fade from existence. For this reason exactly, the writer has chosen to speak upon their point of view on how a photograph can also save a memory from disappearing entirely. In this case, the writer is speaking about a Tuesday morning and the beauty of it. In the text, this is a sight the writer chose they didn’t want to forget and had taken a photograph to preserve its beauty forever. “it’ll spiral up and fly away with each passing minute. Lost in the wind, unless someone sticks out a hand to catch it” is a quote the writer uses to once again expand on their idea of the importance of a photo. The use of metaphors that the writer uses to further describe their point, also helps the writer paint a picture in the readers minds to help them understand the writers point even more. The memories that a photo can store are the very reason that the writer has such a large attachment to them. Their fear of forgetting such sights have influenced them to capture as much as possible through the use of a camera. “I could say how this sunrise, this Tuesday morning, will never be seen again by any human being, ever” is another quote the writer said that adds to the writers love for beauty and importance of a photograph. Although there may not be many language features in this quote, there is a deep belief that the writer knows they will forget this beautiful sunrise if it were not to be captured in a photograph. So in my opinion, the writers value of a good photo cannot be measured in words as there is a large emotional attachment that they have to their cherished memories. This is the reason that I believe that they have such a deep attachment to a photograph.

Using personification to further describe an object, in this case a Tuesday morning, can benefit your text massively. The use of personification in any piece of writing for a reader, can turn it from a basic story into a whole experience. In this case, the writer has used a very large amount of personification to help bring this story to life. Giving human characteristics to non human things such as a landscape can do wonders. This text has done that exactly, and in the end, has created a vivid setting for the characters and also brought the ‘Tuesday morning’ to life for us all. “About the sun soaked grass, the tiny blades dancing in their sparkling dew dresses. I’d point at the bare tree branches stretching up to reach the sky.” This quote is an example of good use of personification. It is using giving human characteristics to non human things which ultimately helps us not only understand the writers value but also helps a lot when describing the scene. The writers use of personification helps us see a photo through their eyes. “The tiny blades dancing in their sparkling dew dresses”. This example is telling us what the writer can see when they are looking at the scenery. Ultimately this creates a more vivid setting for us readers, making the text more interesting and also generates a deeper understanding and deeper connection with the writer. In my opinion, the writers use of personification enhanced the text greatly, making it more understandable and helped us see in our minds exactly what the writer wants us to see through their eyes. It added more descriptive details that take more than a naked eye to see and more importantly understand.

The writer of this text has a very deep personal value towards photographs. Through their use of language features and description of the photographs permanence and memories, they have managed to construct a piece of meaningful text with hidden yet easy to find meanings and features. Speaking about the fact that photos are permanent and will prevent you from ever forgetting a memory made it a very powerful piece. Powerful in the sense that there is no wrongly stated line throughout all of their points. It is true that a photograph is permanent (unless deleted) and the writer had brought this across to the readers in a very subtle and easy to understand way. The writer delivered all their meaningful points and beliefs through the use of their language features which overall helped us understand the value that this writer has with photographs. So overall, I believe the writer if this text did an excellent job at portraying their value of photographs.
